A Snowplowing Resistance Model for Use in Vehicle Dynamic Modeling

Abstract This paper develops a simple mechanics-based model of snowplowing resistance for use in vehicle dynamic modeling for snowplowing operations. The mechanics-based model developed provides the basis for design of an advanced driver assistance system for snow removal operations. The control volume approach from continuum mechanics is used to develop a rather simple model that can estimate forces acting on the plow during steady state snow removal operation. Plow sliding resistance, plow air resistance, and friction force between the plow and the snow being deflected from the plow are all taken into account. The model is shown to closely match some of the existing experimental data on snow removal operations and can be incorporated easily into any vehicle dynamic model.
