Managing the Utility of Manufacturing Process Facilities through Lean Supply Chain

Purpose: The product’s features and parameters are increasingly dependent upon the organization’s competencies regarding infrastructural adequacies and abilities of the organization to manage its equipment and facilities in an optimal manner. This article aims to couple the Lean principles with supply chain characteristics in an Indian environment. The relationship between these two methodologies has common attributes with a different course of actions which results in enhanced performance as an outcome. The main aim to establish this relationship is to set- out the focus of all entrepreneurs on customer satisfaction and at lowest cost of the product. Methodology: The methodology adopted over here is a review based empirical research on the published literatures on both Lean Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management. The relationship between these two methodologies is established. Restraints: The conclusion drawn from the review is based upon various authors’ perception on either or both in integrated form, say as “Lean Supply Chain subjects Management”. Further, the misapplication of LSCM approach will lead to a waste of multiple resources. Requirement: Indian entrepreneur is looking for his share in global market. Such a situation has arisen because Indian manufacturers constantly aim at production of high quality product at low cost with efficient utilization of resources using Pull Production. LSCM approach when implemented in Indian manufacturing environment is expected to build the confidence level of the customer towards Indian manufacturers. Results: The communication channel, culture and environment for an organization are proposed as the important parameters, which lead to an organization towards success/ failure. The smooth flow of material is possible only in the case where information is utilized at its optimum level. Additionally, the identification of Ten Commandments (10-C) which are common to both methodologies along with their influence on Industrial Performances is stipulated to help in the various fields where these commandments have influence are demand collaboration with operational resources and suppliers, operation planning, inventory management practices, identification and elimination of non value- added activities etc.
