Despite the convergence characteristic of the load flow solution not be affected by the bus adopted as reference, the transmission losses and, therefore, the system power mismatch will be affected by its choice. This paper aims to present the influ- ence of slack bus choice during the process of total real power loss reduction by using a continuation method, and to show that using the proposed method provides not only a reduction of losses and, consequently, the operating costs, but also an increase in the maximum loading point, ie, the margin of stability of the system. Improvements in loading margin, achieved by reducing the losses are significant since they are obtained without any change in active power injections, except for the slack bus.
