Abstract A brief review is presented of the fundamentals, assumptions and the organization of the science of applied probabilistic methods in reliability methodology. The general field of probabilistic methods is divided into three parts: the theory of probability, classical statistics, and Bayesian concepts. The viewpoint of the review is that of the engineer in search of tools that work in the solution of practical problems.
