On the Variation of the Fine-structure Constant, and Precision Spectroscopy

We summarize the constraints on a possible time variation of the finestructure constant, α, we obtained using UVES/VLT data. In particular, we report new results based on the analysis of 6 Ni II systems. No variation is found to a fractional level of about 0.2×10-5 over a redshift range 0.4 ≤ z ≤ 2.5. We discuss the importance of precision spectroscopy to improve the constraint on α variation, based on our detailed analysis of a high resolution spectrum (R ∼ 112 000) obtained with HARPS.
