Achieving maximum torque for switched reluctance motor drive over its entire speed range

This paper deals with the derivation of commutation angles for maximum torque for switched reluctance motors operated over their entire speed range. A linearised model of the motor was used for this purpose, and the definition of the rated speed was derived. It is shown that the switched reluctance motor provides constant power in the field-weakening mode in case of continuous current operation. Then, switched reluctance drive is compared to induction and interior permanent magnet synchronous motor drives with the inverter made of the same semiconductor power devices, which revealed that AC motor drives are advantageous in most operation modes.
