Superplasticizer and Silica Fume Addition Effects on Heat of Hydration of Mortar Mixes with Low Water-Cementitious Materials Ratio

An investigation was performed to assess the influence of silica fume and superplasticizer on the heat of hydration of mortar mixtures with low water-cementitious materials ratios (w/cm). Superplasticizer and silica fume were added, in various proportions, to a control mixture. The temperature rise, total heat generated, and rate of heat generation were monitored by a quasi-adiabatic calorimeter. Superplasticizer and silica fume were both found to significantly affect the heat characteristics of the mixtures. Silica fume increased the early heat generation, whereas superplasticizer retarded early heat generation. The total heat generated was a function of the amount of silica fume. More heat was generated at medium addition of silica fume than at zero or high additions.
