Avoiding sewer replacement through rehabilitation

This article describes an investigation of an interceptor sewer with a 50-year design life that deteriorated signilicantly after only 6 years of service. The investigators reviewed design documents, studied the failed epoxy lining, evaluated the effects of industrial effluents, and completed physical inspections. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) attack was found to be the main cause of the deterforation. The investigation showed that the proposed total replacement ($20 million) was not required. The interior damage could be repaired and a magnesia slurry applied for <$1 million.
