Comparison of Chevron-Akin osteotomy and distal soft tissue reconstruction-Akin osteotomy for correction of mild hallux valgus

Summary The aim of this study was to compare the results of the chevron-modified Akin double osteotomy to the distal soft tissue reconstruction-modified Akin osteotomy for correction of mild hallux valgus deformity, using identical criteria in two groups of patients with similar preoperative characteristics. Ten patients (18 feet) that underwent chevron-modified Akin double osteotomy and 13 patients (20 feet) that underwent distal soft tissue reconstruction-modified Akin osteotomy were reviewed using objective and subjective criteria. Chevron-modified Akin double osteotomy resulted in a statistically significant greater correction of the intermetatarsal 1–2 angle, hallux valgus angle and tibial sesamoid position compared to the distal soft tissue reconstruction-modified Akin osteotomy. No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups using any of the subjective criteria: pain relief, cosmesis, great toe motion and overall satisfaction.
