Intelligent Motor Controllers

New switching devices have made very sophisticated motor control strategies possible using modern microprocessors and complex control algorithms. In this way a transducerless controller can be implemented to give an intelligent operating system with both data collection and control capabilities via a computer interface. The controller can allow for precise torque and speed measurements by generating PWM switching waveforms in real-time with independent amplitude and frequency control. The algorithms used to determine the appropriate parameters at any given instant are discussed briefly. All the control features can be implemented in a single chip Intel 8052 microprocessor to give a very versatile controller with no manufacturing cost premium over a conventional controller.
