Orthogonal-core type variable inductor

Due to its peculiar magnetic circuit and coupling, an orthogonal-core variable inductor has such virtues as perfect linear control characteristic and low harmonic current contents. Hence, more and more attention is focused on it for its promising applications in the reactive power control. In this paper, the fundamental configuration and operating principle of such kind of inductors are described. According to the equivalent magnetic circuit, the basic equation for the magnetic circuit of the orthogonal core is derived. Based on the 3D nonlinear reluctance network model, the mathematic equations are presented, thus an electromagnetic coupled simulation model. The presented work underpins the further research on the analysis and design of such kind of inductors.
