Effects of Structural Parameters on Operating Characteristics of a Solenoid Injector

Abstract A parametric study is conducted to predict effects of structural parameters on operating characteristic of a solenoid used for gas injector. To describe operation of the solenoid injector, two simulation models are established including an electrical model and a mechanical model. The solenoid injector is also modeled and simulated in Maxwell and Simplorer based on the specifications of a real solenoid injector. Structural parameters, such as spring stiffness, mass of the plunger, and number of turns, are changed to investigate their effects on the operating characteristics of the solenoid injector, including the current, electromagnetic force, and displacement of the plunger. The simulation results show that changes in spring stiffness, mass of the plunger, and number of turns have significant effects on the electromagnetic force and displacement of the plunger in the solenoid injector. In particular, the increase in plunger mass results in fluctuating plunger displacement, which can affect the quality of injection.
