Literature review of accident analysis methodologies and cycle facilities

While the casualty rate per kilometre for all road users is steadily falling despite steadily increasing numbers of motor vehicles, the already high rate for cyclists is continuing to rise. As a result, in recent years a great deal of interest has been shown by both government and local authorities in finding ways to reduce the risk to cyclists. This review of published literature aimed to gain a good appreciation of the current methods of accident data collection and analysis, particularly as they relate to cyclists, and of the ways of providing facilities for cyclists. It forms an important part of the input to a study concerning the development and testing of an accident analysis methodology with particular concern for cyclists, the report on which is published as a separate document (see IRRD No 826195).
