Permanent transvenous synchronous cardiac pacing.

We have described the development of a J-shaped electrode catheter designed to lodge in the right atrial appendage. Stable location of the catheter without fixation occurs in the dog with satisfactory long-term P wave pickup. The electrode catheter was modified for clinical use and permanent transvenous synchronous cardiac pacing has been successfully established in six patients. The synchronous atrioventricular mode was used in four patients and the sequential atrioventricular mode in two patients. Follow up of these patients ranges from 1 to 19 months with stable synchronous or sequential pacing in all.
