Computer-aided maintenance management systems

Computers have been used in maintenance for over 20 years, and many users claim to be `world class' or adopting `best practice'. However, from the analysis of 725 AMIS maintenance management audits, the results would suggest that over 60% of companies are not satisfied with their system and cannot demonstrate clear benefits from operating these systems. In many instances, computer systems have actually created additional work and are driving the management process rather than being a tool supporting the process. This article highlights some of the main reasons for lack of success in the use of computer-aided maintenance management systems (CAMMS) and suggests a better way forward.
