System management strategy to monitor insulated power cables

For the operation programs and preventive maintenance a fundamental focus is to monitor the efficiency of components of a distribution system. A right goal for the maintenance is the evaluation of synthetic parameters suitable to furnish, after each measuring time interval, the updated check up of the maintaining components. For the distribution circuits the paper suggests a system management strategy SMS based on the evaluation of the insulated cables deterioration. To do it off line, the authors deals a practical and useful life calculation tool "LCT", evaluating a check up of the cable. When a supervisory control system is available, the LCT could be organized automatically like a device "on line" (CHD). Synthetically, the device suggested will count the losses of the life due to all the events of over and under temperatures both causing the protective device and doing not. The events without trip, that create a faster degradation of the insulation, in the actual maintenance program generally aren't computed nor signaled. The SMS could introduce and sponsor the operating approach for which the power cable operation has to be related to the actual life loss differently than the designing approach. Knowing the check-up of the power cables the system operators will can: -monitor the cables life loss; -optimize the cables efficiency; - upgrade the distribution system. A new scenario could be opened for a distribution system management culture.
