Regulation of Structural Protein Interactions as Revealed in Phage Morphogenesis

Advances in cellular and molecular biology continue to reveal new aspects of the structural organization within cells. A multiplicity of protein-protein interactions must be involved in the control of the assembly and function of the microtubules, microfilaments, nuclear pores, centrioles, and other components of cytoskeletal networks. These structures must assemble in precise locations, correctly linked to the overall cellular structure, and generally at a particular stage of the cell cycle. The characteristics of such structure-forming processes differ in many ways from the classical models for the control of intermediary metabolism, such as the induction and repression of enzyme synthesis.
