New Clues to the Possible Origin of Ascomycetes

Among the potential habitats of fungi on this globe the largest ones, namely the oceans, are the least well explored mycologically. In contrast to about 50,000 species known from terrestrial environments (Ainsworth 1968), not more than approximately 250 marine species have been described (Johnson and Sparrow 1961, Kohlmeyer and Kohlmeyer 1971). Although the number of extant marine fungi will by no means match that of terrestrial species, as will be explained later, increasing interest in marine sciences brings to light some new and often unusual species. The discovery of a new order of marine fungi, Spathulosporales, parasites on red algae (Kohlmeyer 1973), appears to give additional evidence for an evolutionary link between red algae and Ascomycetes.
