Vital Sign Detection Using Short-range mm-Wave Pulsed Radar

Proximity sensors have been developing through the last decades. Adopting a radiation source and analyzing the reflected signal, obstacles and surroundings can be sensed and detected from a distance without contact. The mm-wave radar systems provide considerable potential in vital sign detection compared to the other proximity sensing choices based on audio and ultrasonic waves or optical signaling. In this study, a 60 GHz radar system was employed for contactless vital sign detection, such as respiration and heartbeat rate. The potential of the system in measuring through the materials was studied in various transmission situations. Three different methods were examined for preparing the phase information, and a clinically certified heartbeat rate measurement tool analyzed the accuracy of the results. The suggested algorithm can scan the region in the radar field of view and capture exceptional features like the heartbeat rate with a median accuracy of 96.22%.
