Abstract In this paper, a two-fluid model of turbulent two-phase flow is used to simulate turbulent stratified flows. This is a unified multi-fluid model for the motion of each phase in the flow, whose turbulent transport is closed by a two-phase k–e model. The exchanges of mass, momentum and energy between the two phases are fully accounted for in the simulation. For illustration, a case of turbulent stratified flow with strong buoyancy effects, for which extensive experimental data are available, is selected for examination. It is shown that the numerical results agree well with the experimental data.
