With the improvement of living standards and the changes in the demnographic structures in society the need for living has become higher and diverse. Recently the increase of elderly people in the population is very noticeable in Korea. But the standards for the planning and design of housing according to the law and in the various ordinances do not cope with the change and thereby are not enough to meet the new needs of the elderly residents living in apartment housing. The goal of this study is to analyse the outdoor(community) life of the elderly people in apartment housing, to formulate the needs of these people and finally to suggest new design guidelines and standards. The findings are as follows. 1. The most interesting topics among the elderly in their daily life are those related with healthcare and how to spend one's leisure time. 2. The households in which only elderly people reside are on the increase and at the same time they prefer to live in a small housing unit as the younger people leave and their own income decreases. 3. The outdoor life of the elderly is not restricted in spaces and facilities planned especially for the elderly(for example Old Folks Pavillion). Their outdoor life takes place in all the outdoor space and facilities in the apartment block in which they live. The following elements are discussed and design guidelines and standards for these are suggested, -the rest comer with benches and shades, roads and parking facilities in residential areas, green covered areas and detail design, -Old Folks Pavillion, healthcare and gymnastic facilities for the redidents, childrens play grounds.
