Summary form only given as follows. Structured benchmarking is a relatively new addition to the plethora of organizational improvement tools. The idea is simple and attractive. In general term, benchmarking enables learning, adapting, and implementing best practices of the leading companies. It is an attempt to encourage organizations to move away from the syndrome of "not invented here" towards learning from one another. Benchmarking is often used for improvement of existing processes, but rarely as a tool for planning the implementation of new technology.
