Novel Disposable Technologies for Rapid Scale up of Suspension Cultures

Increasing interest for disposable non-instrumented bioreactors is due to the possibilities these systems offer to increase assay capacity for multi-parameter process development. A system based on disposable 50 ml shaken bioreactors is presented in this report. Up to 1000 bioreactor units were tested within a time period of one week. The experiment allowed the simultaneous analysis of 29 chemically defined medium and 20 protein hydrolysates on the growth and productivity of 3 distinct CHO cell lines. The feasibility of such a study opens clearly new perspectives in rapid and efficient cell line development.
