Online dynamic security assessment: implementation problems and potential use of artificial intelligence

This paper reviews the main requirements and implementation problems of a comprehensive security assessment system that is able to handle voltage stability, angular stability, overloads and other dynamic constraints. The approach adopted to assess all the aspects of the problem simultaneously is the time domain simulation that encompasses medium term effects. The computational effort is huge because of the large amount of time domain simulations required to evaluate the margins of the security region. The possibility for using artificial intelligence to overcome some of the problems in this particular context is analysed.
