Structural Design of Tall Steel Buildings

This is the second in the ASCE five-volume Tall Building series. It is a comprehensive reference record and guide to the design and behavior of tall steel buildings. The volume is divided into eight sections: elastic analysis and design, plastic analysis and design, stability, stiffness, fatigue and fracture, connections, load and resistance factor design (limit states design), and mixed construction. In addition, the design philosophies of tall steel buildings are explored. Rather than emphasizing the difference between steel and concrete construction for tall buildings, the authors foresee the use of both steel and concrete to mutual advantage; steel members and concrete panels, slabs, or encasing act together to support load. Thus, in addition to the chapters on mixed construction, readers are advised to use the concrete volume in the Tall Building series. An extensive glossary, list of references and a short history of tall steel buildings are included. The five volume series was prepared by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, and this council is sponsored by the following societies: the ASCE, the Int'l. Assoc. for Bridge and Structural Engineering, the American Institute of Architects, the American Institute of Planners, the Int'l. Fed. for Housing and Planning, and the Int'l. Union of Architects. Design firms and industry members account for nearly 2/3 of the 175-member editorial team, and altogether there were 800 contributors.
