A logistic prototype system based on GIS and GPS

Logistics has become a fast-growing industry in recent years. According to its practical needs, it has integrated transportation, storage, loading and unloading, disposal and information processing. Lacking real-time information is a key problem for making an immediate decision. In this paper the author first analyzes the new requirements of logistics after a brief introduction. Further, the author puts forward new solutions including vehicle location etc. It provides more real-time and accurate information such as spatial data, vehicle information, warehouse, updated catalog etc. The prototype system of a logistics information platform, which is the result of a project funded by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, is given. The statistical result of the tryout has shown that incorporation of GPS and GIS in the logistics industry has greatly improved the configuration of resources.
