Acquisition of the English WISH-type Subjunctive Mood

Based on Noticing Hypothesis and in the view of cognitive linguistics and psycholinguistics,the present paper reports an empirical study on the effects of explicit focus-on-form with processing instruction and implicit focus-on-form with input enhancement on L2 acquisition of the English WISH-type subjunctive by Chinese L2 learners in the Chinese context.The analyses of the data collected through a series of tests are carried out with the application of SPSS and by the qualitative and quantitative research methods.The results show that processing instruction has a significant effect in facilitating the learners in acquiring the English WISH-type subjunctive,while input enhancement shows no significant difference.The result of the present study is hoped to raise the Chinese language teachers' concern with the formal instruction of the language forms since the communicative teaching model is popular in the English class in China.
