Predicting the cross-wind response of masts and structural members

Abstract A short review of early work on the cross-wind response of masts and some full scale failures has been presented to introduce recent measurements of the response of some large cantilevered circular steel tubes in the 1 MW wind tunnel at Monash University. It has been concluded that the mass-damping parameter cannot be used alone to define critical response, and that for analytical models to be useful they must include amplitude dependent effects which will predict “lock-in” behaviour which has been characterised here by the peak factor.
