Ultrasound Findings of the Colon in Four Patients of Mesenteric Phlebosclerosis

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine ultrasound (US) findings of the colon in cases of mesenteric phlebosclerosis (MP) and to determine the possibility of US screening for MP. Methods: We previously reported a case of MP found by ultrasound (US) examination. We recently encountered three cases of asymptomatic MP found by US scan. We examined the US and CT findings of these four cases. Results: In all four cases, US as well as CT could detect wall thickening in the right hemicolon. Colon wall layers were observed with US in two patients. In all cases US detected the disappearance of haustra and high-echoic spots or lines in the colon wall. Calcification beside the colon wall was hardly detected during US examination. Conclusion: The findings suggested that simple and non-invasive US is useful for the screening of the development of MP.
