A survey of wireless sensor network applications from a power utility's distribution perspective

The task of monitoring and controlling power distribution networks is very challenging given the huge number of assets involved and their wide geographic distribution; this frames a role for wireless sensor network (WSN) applications. This paper provides an overview of the highlights from a comprehensive survey commissioned by Eskom regarding the feasibility of WSNs on the transmission and distribution network; the aim is to direct power utility investment and research and development effort.
