Recent Developments in Composite Bridges

Composite steel and concrete bridges are becoming increasingly popular, in particular for short and medium spans. This renewed interest is due first of all to the great freedom for creativity and innovation which is given to engineers involved in both design and construction. It is also due to the recognition of an increased durability when compared with prestressed concrete bridges. Additionally it is a highly competitive form of construction, especially in countries where labour is expensive. Excellent possibilities to refine and improve the bridge aesthetics are a further benefit. Five specific examples of real projects are considered, with particular attention given to the technical details.
