Raman spectroscopic study of thortveitite structure silicates

Single crystals of ytterbium, lutetium and scandium pyrosilicates were grown by a floating zone technique associated with an are image furnace. The recorded infrared and Raman spectra allow complete attribution of internal and external modes, in good agreement with group theory predictions.
