Microwave Breast Imaging with a Non-Contacting, Monopole Antenna Array

We have developed a prototype microwave breast imaging system and have begun breast examinations on a small number of volunteer patients. Key elements of the system include the water bath coupling medium and the mechanically movable monopole antenna array. Initial exams have proved informative in terms of recovered images, expected in vivo tissue properties and concerns about suitable coupling media. It has also provided a framework for experimenting with mechanical issues including vertical motion of the antenna array and allowed us to collect patient feedback concerning examination comfort. We have also been able to explore possible image enhancement techniques which have particular benefit to our site-specific imaging apparatus.
