Echolocation as Seen from the Viewpoint of Radar/Sonar Theory

The design and performance of optimum detectors and estimators depend on the echo waveform. The echo, in turn, depends on the target model. Animal echolocation targets are different from targets that concern man-made systems, with the exception of targets that vibrate or have moving parts. With this discrepancy in mind, the discussion focuses on detectors and estimators for a point target model (to compare with some experimental results), a non-random model for a time varying extended target (flying insect or swimming fish), and a model for a random time varying extended target.
