The automobile in 1997: Systems engineering promises integrated performance features, more luxuries, and advanced diagnostics

The author predicts what sophisticated cars will be like in ten years. The chief features are: (1) power-train controls that respond to the varying amounts of engine-torque demands by integrating response with driver input; (2) automatic electronic suspension control (active suspension) to improve both the ride and the handling; (3) electronic management of the car's electric-power system based on novel power-generating components and load-management controls; (4) traction control that combined power-train control and antilock braking; and (5) multipurpose switches and shared displays for driver information, climate control, and entertainment systems. The means by which these technological advances will be accomplished are examined.
