In this book a concise synopsis of current railway technology is provided. From an introductory review of the transport and marketing context of railways, the author deals with the mechanical behaviour, materials, defects, analysis and design of track and its components. High speeds and other aspects of train dynamics are considered in detail, together with the consequent requirements imposed on track and layout design. There are 13 chapters entitled: (1) railways and transport; (2) the track system; (3) railway subgrade; (4) mechanical behaviour of track; (5) the rail; (6) sleepers-fastenings; (7) ballast; (8) transverse effects-derailment; (9) truck layout; (10) switches and crossings; (11) track maintenance; (12) train dynamics; (13) diesel and electric traction. The book includes details of UIC and other rail specifications. The first edition was published in 1995 (see IRRD 878597).
