On-line performance monitoring of a transmission line using synchrophasor measurements

Synchrophasors are increasingly being implemented to improve the understanding of network performance. This paper presents the use of voltage and current synchrophasors in the on-line performance monitoring of a transmission line. Line parameters, conductor temperature and sag are continuously derived. Power transfer capability and voltage stability requires minimal additional computational effort. The system operator can continuously access the real state of the power system and not estimated values obtained from state estimators if both voltage and current synchrophasor data is available. Field data obtained across a 330kV, 521 km line is used to evaluate these opportunities.
