Medical image compression with thresholding denoising using discrete cosine-based discrete orthogonal stockwell transform

Discrete Cosine-based Discrete Orthogonal Stockwell Transform (DCST) provides a time-frequency representation method of signal, and has broad application prospects in image processing. Based on DCST transform, we propose a method for medical image compression while improving the image quality. Main steps of the method are as follows: the image is transformed into coefficients in DCST domain; and then these coefficients are handled using soft thresholding technique. Finally, Huffman coding is used to compress the image in DCST domain. Experimental results show that the method can substantially promote the compression ratio and time efficiency under the premise of increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. So the new method is feasible and practicable for medical image compression with noise reduction.
