The selection of materials for marine environments

Corrosion performance is not always the determining factor when selecting the materials for aggressive marine conditions. Structures and plant have to be fabricated and materials might be selected for weldability and forming characteristics as well as for corrosion properties. Corrosion is an important requirement, particularly in marine situations, and must be considered as a priority in relation to other factors. This chapter discusses the factors that are considered while selecting the materials for marine environments. The general considerations are: (1) cost in relation to life and maintenance or replacement; (2) mechanical and physical requirements; (3) availability in the form required; (4) ease of forming and fabrication; (5) weldability and/or ease of soldering or brazing; and (6) ease of installation, repair and replacement. For many situations, alloys have been used over a number of years. There is a requirement for materials to withstand aggressive conditions and as the demand grows, either new alloys are produced or the materials that were thought to be exotic become cheaper as greater use is made of them..
