A Written Collection Development Policy: To Have and Have Not

As budgetary uncertainties continue, ever greater emphasis must be laid on collection management. Intuition and educated feeling no longer suffice as modes of operation. More varied and sophisticated management tools are needed in order to anticipate and deal with library needs. This article surveys recent trends in collection development policies in the academic library. Special attention is given to how lack of a written policy has longlasting effects on library operation.
