Bases and Ambiguity of Number Systems

Abstract The degree of ambiguity of a given number system can be effectively computed. We show also that all degrees of ambiguity do exist, both as regards number systems and the sets represented by them. In contrast to language theory, there are inherently unambiguous sets. The paper contains also results concerning the possibility of changing the base of a number system.
