Control of side-to-side vibration of the tower of a variable speed and variable pitch wind turbine

A study was performed on the control strategy of a large variable speed and variable pitch(VSVP) wind turbine with very small structural damping to suppress the side to side vibration of the tower. The side-to-side vibration damping of the tower can be improved by setting an additional torque setpoint based on feedback gain and vibration acceleration measurements of the tower head, and applying the elliptic band-pass filter and Chebyshev low-pass filter in the feeback control loop in the controller design.Simulation for a 5 MW wind turbine with the proposed control strategy was conducted on Bladed software platform. The results show that the proposed control strategy can effectively reduce the side to side displacement without too much influence on rotor speed and generator torque.
