Multimodal multimedia communication: Resource allocation to many users

In a general multi-modal multimedia scenario, both the mode (video, audio only, “gamecast”, etc.) and the corresponding level of “perceptual quality” need to be judiciously chosen. Below we precisely formalise this resource allocation problem, and provide a solution based on Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) analysis. Our focus now is problem formulation with a conceptual/analytical viewpoint. Future reports will explicitly consider lower-layer resources, and may include numerical results.
