Fine-needle aspiration of thyroid gland

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the thyroid has made its mark as a reliable tool in the initial management of thyroid nodules. It is most effective in diagnosing malignant tumors of the thyroid, especially the most common one—papillary thyroid carcinoma. Despite its high diagnostic sensitivity and specificity, the success of thyroid FNAB is operator dependent and relies on expertise in performing the procedure, type of specimen preparation, and interpretation of the cytology. This review includes recommended published guidelines and our modifications for FNAB of the thyroid and a brief description of cytologic features and differential diagnosis of various thyroid lesions.
