Computing for the terrified

Abstract With the current need in England and Wales to involve every teacher in the development of pupils' capability in Information Technology (IT), it is necessary to consider the training requirements of those teachers who are reluctant to come forward for courses in the use of computers or to seek the help of expert colleagues. This paper examines the notion of “computerphobia”, its causes, symptoms and possible cures; and describes how a major in-service training initiative in one Local Education Authority attempted to change teachers from being frightened of new technology to having a desire to use IT regularly and to learn more—in just 9 h. Participants' perceptions before and after the course are analysed, and some conclusions drawn of the effect of this type of training and its implications for school based work.
