A compact low-cost doppler sensor MMIC in SiGe technology for the ISM band at 24 GHz

A Doppler sensor MMIC operating in the license free ISM band at 24GHz using SiGe technology is demonstrated. The MMIC consists of two coupled oscillators: one driving a buffer amplifier for transmitting and the other a single balanced Gilbert cell mixer for receiving. For the oscillator lumped elements are used resulting in a total chip size of only 780x690 μm2. The MMIC is mounted by a Rip-chip technique on a microwave laminate substrate with two patch antennas: one for transmitting and the other for receiving. The functionality was demonstrated by measuring the Doppler shift of several moving objects.
