Heavy metal uptake and tissue distribution in earthworms

Earthworms can contribute to the physical structure and nutritive value of the soil by burrowing and feeding but they can also be a potential pollution hazard. Numerous authors, reviewed by Hughes et ale (1980) and Beyer (1981), have reported that earthworms can take up and accumulate in their tissues heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury and gold, when living both in non- contaminated and contaminated environments (Helmke et al., 1979).
