The IGES standard

The Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES) is an international standard, Version 5.0 of which is now current. It is used widely with a fair degree of success. Early versions suffered from inadequate precision in the specification and an inadequate range of entities. Also, vendors adopted the sharp practice of carrying out only partial implementation in order to make claims that they had “IGES compatibility”. Things are a little better at the time of writing and most users find they can establish successful transfers using it after a day or two of problem solving.
