Urban Traffic Lights Based on Two-stage Fuzzy Control and Simulation

Based on analyzing the current situation of urban traffic signal control,a two-stage fuzzy control system for single intersection was designed in this paper. The controller got flows and queues from its detectors to estimate traffic intensity, which was then used to determine whether the current signal phase should be extended or terminated. The average delay of the vehicles, which drove through the intersection, was used as a performance index in order to weigh the performance of this controller.A four-phase simulated system was designed and realized by using Matlab program. The results show that this method can effectively decrease the average delay in the intersection and is superior to a traditional vehicle actuated control method.
