Fiber-wireless wavelength-division multiplexing networks with a reliable optical backbone

Fiber-wireless networks employing an optical backbone provide a cost-effective and flexible approach for last-mile access networks for a great number of users. We propose a broadband hybrid fiber-wireless wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network that uses a reliable optical backbone. This architecture can perform the self-healing function under link failure. In addition, we implement our study by using computer simulations of the optical channel model and the radio fading channel model for estimations of carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) and bit-error rate (BER), respectively. Finally, we set up an experimental broadband fiber-wireless WDM network to demonstrate its performance for reliable and economic wireless-access units.
